To mark the occasion of my bornday I allowed myself a day off (just the one, mind) to wallow in nostalgia and go back to my roots as a DJ.

This is a fast-moving mix of over 60 of the rap/ hip-hop club bangers that I used to play in the 90s – veering off into some R&B and street soul towards the end. Many of these were picked up on my first visits to New York in 1994 and ’95 when I became absolutely captivated by the city.

Followers of my regular work should be aware that this does NOT constitute conscious message music! It’s likely to appeal mainly to hip-hop heads who will remember this stuff from the time, or those adventurous/ curious enough to give it a try. I don’t endorse the majority of the lyrical content displayed here any more, (and have cleaned up some of the more potty-mouthed lyrics here and there.) The lyrical agendas aside, though … they do still sound great!

THE SWING SHIFT, GALAXY 101, 5/7/96

Some pure 90s nostalgia from first time around! This is one of my very earliest Swing Shift shows, which aired every Friday night on Galaxy 101 in Bristol. Pure street soul, swing, hip-hop and ragga all the way, including an interview with radio legend Kool DJ Red Alert recorded in New York. Stunningly good music that was all current at the time, and listening to it makes you realise just how great that decade was, and how much has been lost in the music that’s laughingly referred to as ‘R&B and hip-hop’ these days!

SWING SHIFT UK SPECIAL, GALAXY 101, 21/4/98

Some 90s radio nostalgia right here. This was the UK Special edition of the Swing Shift on Galaxy 101, Bristol, aired on Easter Monday, 1998. I co-presented this one with a very bubbly Shola Ama, who was the biggest name on the UK street soul scene at the time. It consists of nothing but R&B and hip-hop tracks by British artists. Part 2 rounds off with a live freestyle session between Kent’s Lethal, aka Ill Jargon, and Kelz of Bristol’s 3PM Crew.
